A Little Side Trip
The last several essays have taken us into some fairly deep waters.
So I thought we might take a little side trip.
Nothing technical this time. No diagrams. No complicated explanations.
Just something ordinary that has probably happened to most of us.
I’ve been thinking about what happens when two people try to do something together over a video call—and why something that seems almost ridiculously easy can suddenly become surprisingly difficult.
It started with a clap.
And it left me wondering about something much bigger.
I’ve been thinking about something.
Have you ever tried clapping in unison with someone over a video call?
It sounds so simple that you hardly expect it to fail.
Someone smiles and says, “Ready? One… two… three…”
You both clap.
Except… it almost never happens at the same time.
One person claps first. The other laughs and tries to adjust. Then the first person adjusts. Before long, both of you are laughing because something that should be effortless has become surprisingly difficult.
I’ve been wondering why.
At first, it seems obvious.
Maybe one person has bad timing.
Maybe someone counted too quickly.
Maybe the internet is just slow.
But none of those explanations feels completely satisfying.
After all, neither person forgot how to clap.
Neither person suddenly lost their sense of rhythm.
Both people understand the goal.
So what changed?
The answer isn’t found in either person. It’s found in the relationship between them.
When you’re talking over a video call, you and your friend aren’t experiencing the same moment at exactly the same time. Every sound and every image takes a journey before it reaches the other person. Sometimes that journey is quick. Sometimes it takes a little longer. Occasionally it changes from one moment to the next.
Without realizing it, each of you is responding to a slightly different version of “now.”
You may have felt this during an ordinary phone call.
You begin speaking just as the other person begins. Both of you stop. There is a brief silence as each waits for the other to continue.
Then, almost comically, you both start talking again.
“Sorry, go ahead.”
“No, you go ahead.”
Another pause.
Then you both start again.
Nothing is wrong with either person. You can both hear. You both understand the conversation. The words are getting through.
And yet something feels slightly off.
Perhaps the problem isn’t the conversation itself.
Perhaps it’s the timing between the people having it.
The more I think about it, the more fascinating it becomes.
Nothing about either person’s intelligence has changed.
Nothing about either person’s ability has changed.
Only the relationship between them has changed.
That tiny shift is enough to turn something beautifully simple into something unexpectedly difficult.
It makes me wonder how often we focus on the parts of a system while overlooking the relationships between them.
When something doesn’t work, our instinct is usually to ask:
“Which part failed?”
Was it the microphone?
The internet connection?
The computer?
The software?
Those are reasonable questions.
But perhaps there’s another question that’s just as important.
What if every part is working exactly as it should, but the relationships between those parts are no longer being preserved?
Maybe that’s why this simple experiment is so memorable.
It reminds us that success isn’t always determined by how capable the individual parts are.
Sometimes it’s determined by how well those parts remain connected to one another.
Perhaps the next time you find yourself laughing as two people struggle to clap together over a video call—or waiting through that strange little silence on a phone call—you’ll notice something different.
Maybe it isn’t rhythm that’s failing.
Maybe it isn’t intelligence.
Maybe it’s something much less obvious.
